Go Brazil!!!

Those of you in the United States may not even know that the World Cup starts today. I never paid much attention to it before. But if you are in Brazil, there's no way to miss it!

Every store window is decked out in blue, yellow and green. The flags are flying on buildings, houses, and cars. It's the event that has been anticipated for four years, and this year it is taking place right here in Brazil! We were laughing the other day at the advertisement we heard for a paint store..."Paint your house now to make it beautiful for the World Cup!"  The president declared every day that Brazil plays a game a national holiday. It's kind of a big deal!

Of course, not everyone is so excited about it, even here. In São Paulo there have been demonstrations and protests over the last year. Apparently, it bothers some people that the country is spending $11 billion on this World Cup, when the health and education system is in such poor shape. I say that sarcastically, of course. It bothers me too, but I know there is nothing that can be done about it. We have seen many articles showing the luxurious accommodations and seating at the soccer stadiums next to pictures of bare, narrow metal cots in some hospitals.

Last week, the employees of the subway system in São Paulo went on strike causing major traffic issues in the world's third largest city that is getting ready to host an international event. I think they knew they had some powerful leverage! I'm so glad we don't live there anymore!

In the midst of all this, many churches are involved in passing out gospel literature at the game venues and using this opportunity to try to witness to people from all over the world. We are praying that these efforts will be profitable and will see much fruit.

The boys are excited about keeping up with the games, and we are cheering for Brazil today as they play in the opening game.

Vai Brasil!!!!!

Boys' Bible Club

On Saturday afternoon, we had our first "Boys' Bible Club" here at our house.  In our neighborhood, there are several groups of boys, roughly 8-14 years old, who hang around together riding bikes, flying kites, playing ball, and whatever else they might decide to do. This is such a crucial age in their lives, and we have a burden to help them however we can. Having three boys who fall (almost) into this age bracket, we decided to start a club once a month to get to know some of these boys, spend some time with him, and hopefully encourage them to live for the Lord.

We invited several boys, and we had eleven come for this first meeting, including our three. Four of these were boys we had just met, so we were especially excited to see them come. Jeremy gave a short lesson from the Bible, and did an object lesson, then they played games for a while in the back yard. We gave them some juice and cookies, and they were on their way.

We were pleased with how things went for this first time, and it seemed that those who came really enjoyed it. We are hoping that they will come back and bring others with them next month.

(I took this one while they were out playing games.
A big pile of flip-flops is a sure sign that you've got company!)

Please help us pray for this outreach, that we might be a light in our neighborhood and that these boys would grasp the truth of God's Word!
