Road Trip - Part 3

"Welcome to the state of Acre"

After crossing the state line, we had to stop at a check-point where they asked us some questions, checked our identification documents, asked if the boys belonged to us and wanted to see documentation to prove it, and they checked the documents for our vehicle. Luckily we had planned on that and had all the information we needed and answered all the questions correctly!

Our first stop in Acre was the capital city of Rio Branco. We stayed there and visited with the Doolittle family. Jeremy had met this family a few years ago, but the kids and I really enjoyed getting acquainted with them. (One of their sons was working and is missing from this picture.)

This is the church building where they are currently meeting.

The boys made some great friends!

We were grateful for their hospitality in breaking up our trip a little.

On to our final destination...in another post!

Road Trip - Part 2

Did I mention that it was a long and exhausting trip?

One new adventure for the boys was riding the ferry across the river. This was a first for them.
We arrived at the ferry with a convoy of Brazilian military vehicles, so we felt secure being escorted by the military.

We crossed the "Rio Madeira" (Wood River) which is a main tributary of the Amazon River.

Road Trip - Part 1

We just got back from the longest road trip we have ever taken here in Brazil. Jeremy was invited by a national pastor friend to preach at his church in the state of Acre.  We traveled around 1100 kilometers (about 700 miles) one way.
It was a very long trip, but we were able to break it up a little bit by stopping to stay with friends along the way.
We weren't sure what the road would be like on the other side of Porto Velho, but we were pleasantly surprised that the condition of the road was better than it is close to our house. There were several places where road crews were working.
This is not usually what you encounter when traveling on a main highway in the United States! Uhhh, where's the pavement?

The bigger challenge of this long trip was finding places to stop for food or restroom breaks. There are not many...actually there are NO cities in the 500 kilometers between Porto Velho and Rio Branco. Just a few little towns along the highway here and there that all look pretty much the same.
We found this little stop on the way that we liked, so we stopped on the way back also.
It was called "Castelinho" which means little castle. It was just a place to get a little snack or drink, but it was pretty clean and well kept.

The restrooms were labeled for Princesses...
                  And for Princes / Frogs

It was a long and exhausting trip, but we had a great time and enjoyed meeting some new friends and exploring new territory. Stay tuned for part two!

A Well-Read Pet

~Because no one wants a dog deprived of literature~
I'm not sure that Clifford is a good example for her to follow,
but she seemed to enjoy it!
